Having Your Home Roof Replaced? Prepare for This Process with These Tips!

A lot of responsibility comes with owning a home. Adequately managing the important parts of your home like the roof can be challenging. As time goes by, the existing roof on your home will wear out and will have to be replaced. Contractors install round 5 million new roofs in the United States annually.

If your existing roof needs to be replaced, finding the right professionals to perform this complex work is vital. Once you find and hire a roofing contractor, the next step is preparing for the roof replacement process. Here are some things that will make residential roof replacement easier for everyone involved.

Protect Items in Your Attic

If you are like most homeowners, you don’t venture into your attic regularly. However, you may have important items located in this space. During the roof replacement process, the installers working on your home will be kicking up a lot of debris. If you have items that don’t need to be coated in thin layers of wood, shingle or insulation dust, you need to cover them with plastic sheeting.

In most cases, this part of your home will remain uncovered while new shingles are being installed. With thick plastic sheeting, you can keep moisture and dust off of the items in your attic. Once the new roof is installed, you will need to remove the plastic and vacuum this area to remove any dust left behind.

Remove Items Hanging from Your Walls

As you prepare your home for the roof replacement process, don’t forget about the items hanging on your wall. When contractors are removing the old shingles from your roof, they will have to use hammers and a lot of force. This can create lots of vibrations that will reverberate through the walls in your home. In some instances, these vibrations can result in the items you have on your walls falling and breaking.

Preventing this damage is only possible when removing these items from your walls ahead of time. Any of the pictures or decorations on your walls that aren’t screwed into a wooden stud should be removed until after the new roof has been installed. By taking these preventative measures, you can avoid losing valuable pictures of knick-knacks with sentimental attachment.

Cut Your Grass and Trim Your Trees Beforehand

Are there multiple branches hanging over your home’s roof? If so, they will have to be removed before roofing contractors can get this job done. You also need to think about putting drop cloths over the plants and grass around your home. Doing this will not only keep these elements protected, it will also make it easier to find and remote roofing nails and other debris that have fallen. If you don’t have time to do this work, hiring a landscaping professional is a wise move.
